He studied art in Malm and in Paris, at the Acadmie Scandinave in 1929. Amongst his circle of friends were Albin Amelin and Sven Erixson. When World War 2 broke out, Olson was one of five Swedes who voluntarily enlisted for France. He fought with his infantry regiment in the Ardennes, Meuse and Verdun. He was taken as a prisoner of war for 2
