These cards take a Pokemon that already exists in the set as a regular C or U and re-print it with a full illustrated background the Pokemons natural habitat, a dynamic action scene, or character interaction
So it would not surprise me to see some Lovecraftian horror elements in Innistrad, which is a horror world

In the Final Fantasy Magic set, town is a land type, which means nothing on its own, but there are some cards that care about seeing towns, much like gates or deserts
It keeps the whole table swinging at each other player instead of focusing on one person too, which is a nice way to promote healthy player behaviour
Because fighting does not count as combat, I can even send Defiler of Faith to attack my opponent and start turning the games tide (though Ill still have 4 damage marked on my creature from the fight, so Ill probably hold it back if theres a blocker, as 1 more point of damage for the rest of the turn will kill it)
