N. Nicollet in the years 1836, 37, 38 and 40 assisted by Lt. J. C. Fremont, of the Corps of Engineers under the direction of Col. J. J. Abert 1843 This is the first great map of the upper Mississippi basin. Nicollet came from France to conduct the survey according to the latest European methods and young Fremont was
