Carved and stained a very dark brown which reads as nearly black

I believe they were likely brother and sister

perhaps they were clipped from some kind of kit designed for transforming playing cards into fortune telling cards

Due to the scale, one actually needs a bit of distance from it to read the message, but much of the beauty and delight is in the details, which somehow seems appropriate in speaking to the nature of a mother!
