I seem to recall seeing a box or two covered like this in what I only know to describe as a sort of fine gravel, but I don't know when that was a thing to do. Whether that surface is original to the box or applied a bit later I am not sure, but the bottom of the box shows much softened original green paint, and I am pretty certain the green and red painted interior are of the same age, original to it, as are the wire hinges all
