but I think it's fabulous--with this early locomotive coal train hand-drawn over and over on old plywood panel in what appears to have been a black marker

so perhaps he made dear pets of them

and many years of happy service in it yet

Not sure what grade young Roland was in when he did this, but it definitely feels Froebel kindergarten inspired, with can array of cut paper weavings and forms adhered to its pages, all executed in what I find quite a sophisticated, and also very French, sort of palette.
